Six steps, in order. Reading them now — before you ever need them — is the best thing you can do for your family's safety.

No flames or sparks
Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, phones, or cell phones inside — flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire.

Leave the area immediately
Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking, right away.

Shut off the gas, if it’s safe
Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

Report the leak
From a neighbor’s home or another nearby building away from the leak, call us right away at 800-991-5869. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.

Do not return to the area
Stay away from the building or area until a qualified technician determines that it is safe to return.

Get your system checked
Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances again, have your entire system checked to make sure it is leak-free.

A few simple practices keep your propane system — and your household — safe all year long.
Know what propane smells like
Propane has a strong, unpleasant smell added to it — like rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray, or a dead animal — specifically so you can detect a leak. If you’re not sure you know the smell, ask us for a demonstration next time we’re out.
Consider a gas detector
Propane gas detectors add an extra layer of protection, especially if you or someone in your home has a reduced sense of smell. Install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Never let your tank run empty
If your tank runs out of gas, a leak check is required by law before service is restored. Air and moisture in an empty tank can also cause rust, which weakens the odor of propane. Automatic delivery is the easiest way to avoid this.
Don’t tamper with your system
Never try to modify, repair, or adjust your tank’s valves, regulators, or fittings yourself. That work should only be done by trained propane professionals — that’s what we’re here for.
Install carbon monoxide alarms
Any fuel-burning appliance can produce carbon monoxide if it malfunctions. Install CO alarms on every level of your home, and never use outdoor appliances like grills or generators indoors.
Keep the area around your tank clear
Keep snow, ice, leaves, and debris cleared from your tank, regulators, and vents, and make sure your driveway stays accessible so our drivers can reach the tank safely for deliveries.
